The Rusty Self-Studier’s AWS SAA Training Plan
A no-fluff study path for engineers returning after a break: rebuild concepts with Cantrill, close gaps with Maarek, and prove readiness with Tutorials Dojo.
If you last touched AWS before serverless was table stakes, the Solutions Architect – Associate is the right on-ramp. It is broad enough to rebuild your mental model of modern cloud architecture but structured enough that you won’t drown in service trivia.
The exam code is SAA-C03, and the recommended path for returning engineers hasn’t changed much: one deep course, one exam-focused review, hands-on repetition, and hard practice exams.
Start with the map, not the flashcards
Most rusty self-studiers fail because they jump to practice questions too early. That produces confidence, not competence.
**Adrian Cantrill’s SAA-C03 course** is the best first pass. It is dense, architectural, and opinionated. Instead of memorizing which service does what, it rebuilds the why: why private subnets matter, how Identity and Access Management fails open or closed, why S3 bucket policies and ACLs are not the same. **Stephane Maarek’s Udemy course** works better after you have that foundation. It’s concise, well-paced for a second pass, and aligned tightly to the exam blueprint. Use it at 1.25x to identify gaps. **Tutorials Dojo** is non-negotiable for practice. Jon Bonso’s [SAA-C03 practice exams](https://tutorialsdojo.com/aws-certified-solutions-architect-associate-saa-c03/) have detailed explanations, comparison-style difficulty, and review modes that feel like the actual exam. Treat each wrong answer as a small spec for what to go study.
**AWS Skill Builder** is helpful for official material. The free [AWS Skill Builder](https://skillbuilder.aws/) courses and [AWS SAA exam guide](https://aws.amazon.com/certification/certified-solutions-architect-associate/) are worth mining for sample questions and service updates.
A five-week comeback plan
Weeks 1–2: Rebuild the map
Use Cantrill for 90 minutes a day. Open an AWS Free Tier account, set a budget alarm, and build as you go. Recreate the core network: VPC, public and private subnets, route tables, internet gateway, NAT gateway, an EC2 instance in a private subnet reachable through a jump box. This is not busywork. It fixes the biggest gap for returning engineers: mental models that only work on diagrams.
Week 3: Compress with Maarek
Move through Maarek’s SAA-C03 course faster. Focus on the services that have changed most since your break: serverless event routing, container options, storage tiers, and identity boundaries. Write one-sentence summaries for each service rather than copying slides.
Week 4: Pressure test with Tutorials Dojo
Take one timed practice exam, then review every wrong answer in detail. Do not skip the review. The review is the learning event. Aim for 70–75% on the first pass. Repeat alternating between review-mode tests and timed tests until you consistently score 85% or higher.
Week 5: Simulate the exam
Build a two-hour exam simulation. Use the official [AWS Well-Architected Framework](https://aws.amazon.com/architecture/well-architected/) and the SAA-C03 exam guide to create questions around operational excellence, security, reliability, performance efficiency, cost optimization, and sustainability. Schedule the exam only after three consecutive 85%+ timed sets.
What to avoid
Don’t watch videos passively. If you can’t explain the service in two sentences, you don’t know it.
Don’t buy exam dumps. They are outdated, inaccurate, and they make you worse at the actual job.
Don’t book the exam too early as a forcing function if you’re still weak on networking or IAM.
Don’t skip the console. Hands-on repetition is what turns vocabulary into architecture judgement.
