SAP-C02 Retake Plan: Turn a 707 Into a Pass
A 707 is 43 points below the 750 passing score. Here's how to read your AWS score report, close the gap, and schedule a confident SAP-C02 retake.
The 707 is a signal, not a verdict
According to the official AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional (SAP-C02) Exam Guide, the passing score is 750 out of 1000. A 707 puts you 43 points short. That is close enough to be tactical, not theoretical. You do not need to relearn AWS from scratch. You need to find the specific domains where the exam out-scored you and rehearse until the scenarios feel automatic.
Start with the AWS score report
AWS does not publish per-domain point totals, but your score report includes a section-level performance bar for every SAP-C02 domain. Pull that report first. The six domains are Design Solutions for Organizational Complexity, Design for New Solutions, Continuous Improvement for Existing Solutions, Accelerate Workload Migration and Modernization, Design for Security and Compliance, and Design for Reliability, Resilience, and Recovery.
Mark any domain that falls below the "meets expectations" line. A 707 often means one or two heavy domains—usually Design for New Solutions or Continuous Improvement—dragged you down while the lighter domains were fine.
Rebuild weak domains with scenario reps
SAP-C02 is not a trivia exam. Questions are long, multi-service architectures with "most cost-effective", "most secure", or "most operationally efficient" constraints. If you missed a domain, do not reread the same course slides. Instead, build a small runbook per weak domain:
Design for New Solutions
Practice translating requirements into AWS services: S3, Lambda, DynamoDB, RDS, Aurora, ECS, EKS, Step Functions, and EventBridge. Focus on decoupling, caching, and cost-aware storage tiers.
Continuous Improvement for Existing Solutions
Drill on right-sizing, S3 lifecycle policies, Auto Scaling groups, Savings Plans, and monitoring with CloudWatch. You need to identify the smallest change that improves performance or cost without breaking SLA.
Security and Compliance
Rehearse IAM policies, SCPs, KMS key policies, VPC endpoints, and encryption in transit. Most security answers are not about adding more permissions; they are about least privilege and boundary controls.
Reliability and Migration
Review multi-AZ and multi-region patterns, backup and restore, pilot light, warm standby, and active-active. For migration, know AWS Application Migration Service, Database Migration Service, and Snow Family use cases.
Practice like you are on call
Two weeks is enough to close 43 points if you practice under exam conditions. Use official AWS Skill Builder practice exams or a high-quality third-party bank. Aim for two full-length, timed sessions per week. Review every wrong answer as if it were a production incident: root cause, then a correction you can explain in one sentence.
Schedule the retake
The AWS Certification retake policy requires a 14-day waiting period after a failed attempt. Use that window deliberately. Retake only when your practice scores are consistently above 780–800 on unfamiliar question sets. On exam day, pace yourself: roughly two minutes per question, flag long scenario questions, and never spend more than three minutes on a single item.
A 707 is not a gap in ability. It is a gap in calibration. Fix the calibration and the pass follows.
