AWS certification is meant to validate cloud skills. But before you can answer a single question about S3 or Lambda, you have to get through Pearson VUE's scheduling, system check, and proctoring flow. That experience has become the biggest source of friction in the AWS certification journey.

The certification experience is part of the product. AWS has invested heavily in developer experience: Console, CLI, CDK, and docs. The certification delivery layer, however, feels like it was built for another era.

Where Pearson VUE breaks for developers

1. System checks are brittle

Pearson VUE's OnVUE software has a history of failing on macOS after minor OS updates, flagging common developer tools as forbidden processes, and requiring candidates to disable firewalls, VPNs, or security settings. In r/AWSCertifications, candidates regularly report missing exams because the system check passed one day and failed the next.

2. Proctoring is inconsistent

One candidate gets a proctor who interrupts for eye movement; another is told to unmount a second monitor that has already been disconnected. The rules are interpreted differently, and appeals take days. This is unacceptable for a high-stakes, $150+ exam.

3. The test-center route isn't much better

For candidates without a compatible personal machine, test centers are sparse. Scheduling a slot can mean waiting weeks, driving hours, or dealing with noisy centers. The in-person experience is not a reliable fallback.

What a modern replacement should look like

AWS doesn't need another legacy test vendor. It needs a delivery layer with the same principles as modern developer tools.

API-first scheduling

Book, reschedule, and cancel through a clean API and webhook-driven notifications. Candidates should be able to script their exam logistics as easily as their infrastructure.

Browser-native exam environment

Lock the browser, not the OS. A Chromium-based secure exam session can isolate tabs, block copy/paste, and record video without requiring admin-level installers. It would work on macOS, Linux, and Windows without disabling firewalls or developer tools.

Continuous identity verification

Use passkeys, biometric liveness checks, and short, event-driven proctoring sessions instead of long, human-watched video. This reduces anxiety and false flags while preserving integrity.

Observable, appealable incidents

If a connection drops or a system check fails, candidates should get an incident ID, logs, and an immediate reschedule path—not a support ticket that disappears for five business days.

Why this matters for AWS

AWS certifications are a career signal. But when the exam experience is broken, the signal gets distorted. Great cloud engineers avoid certification because the delivery layer is hostile. That is a talent pipeline problem for AWS partners and employers.

Replacing Pearson VUE is not about convenience. It is about aligning the certification experience with the developer experience AWS already sells.

The bottom line

Pearson VUE may have been the default for a long time. But defaults expire. AWS now has the scale and the developer-tool ecosystem to demand—and build—a better exam delivery path. It should.
