Pearson VUE is the weak link in AWS certification

AWS exams deserve a modern delivery layer. Pearson VUE's proctoring, scheduling, and support failures are driving engineers away from certification—and the replacement path is already clear.

The exam content isn't failing candidates

AWS certification exams are generally well designed. They test whether an engineer can make sound architectural decisions under pressure. The problem is not the question bank. The problem is the layer between the candidate and the exam: Pearson VUE.

For a $300 high-stakes exam, candidates routinely describe missed start times, proctor no-shows, system crashes after passing the compatibility check, and multi-week support cases that end without a retake. That is not a certification experience. It is a scheduling lottery.

Three structural failures

1. Online proctoring is not reliable enough for high-stakes exams

Pearson VUE's OnVUE platform is the default path for many AWS candidates. The system check can pass cleanly, then the exam can fail to launch. Proctors sometimes disconnect mid-exam without pausing the clock. Candidates report waiting 45 to 90 minutes past their scheduled time while the proctoring queue stalls. On the AWS Certification subreddit, these reports are no longer exceptional; they are part of the expected preparation advice.

A high-stakes exam cannot operate at consumer-beta reliability. When the delivery layer fails, the candidate pays the cost—not the vendor.

2. Support is built to deflect, not to resolve

The most common complaint is not the failure itself; it is what happens next. Candidates are bounced between Pearson VUE and AWS Training and Certification. Pearson VUE opens a case, asks for the same evidence twice, then goes quiet. AWS support points back to Pearson VUE. The candidate is left with a missed exam date, no clear retake path, and no single owner.

Public review profiles for Pearson VUE show the same pattern: long hold times, closed cases without resolution, and no escalation path. That is acceptable for a low-stakes survey tool. It is not acceptable for a certification that influences hiring and promotion decisions.

3. The vendor has no competitive pressure to improve

Pearson VUE holds a near-monopoly position across major IT certification programs. AWS candidates do not choose their exam delivery vendor. They choose AWS, then inherit Pearson VUE. That bundling removes the pressure that would normally force investment in reliability, support, and UX.

When a vendor fails and the customer cannot leave, the service does not improve. It only becomes more defensive.

What a modern AWS exam delivery layer should look like

A replacement does not need to be exotic. It needs to meet a few non-negotiable standards.

**On-time starts above 99%.** A scheduled exam should begin within five minutes of the confirmed time. Anything else should trigger an automatic reschedule and a transparent status page.

**Browser-first proctoring without invasive installs.** Candidates should not need to disable security tools, install kernel-level software, or reconfigure their OS. A secure browser session with live proctoring is enough.

**Human escalation in real time.** If a proctor disconnects or the session crashes, the candidate should have a direct chat path to a human who can pause the clock and resolve the issue.

**One owner for support.** AWS should own the full candidate experience, not outsource the failure. If a vendor issue occurs, AWS should be able to issue a retake immediately.

**Public incident data.** Exam delivery should have the same operational transparency as a modern SaaS platform. Candidates should see incident history, proctoring success rates, and current queue health.

AWS should own the full certification experience

AWS has invested heavily in training, digital badges, Skill Builder, and the certification value proposition. That investment is undermined when the final step—the exam—is handed to a vendor that treats it as commodity testing.

Certification is a developer experience. The platform should be held to the same standard as AWS itself. If AWS wants engineers to trust the credential, AWS must own the delivery, not just the content.

The cost of replacement is real, but the cost of keeping Pearson VUE is higher: frustrated candidates, devalued credentials, and a growing backlog of public failure reports.

AWS certifications should be hard because the material is hard—not because the proctoring software crashes.
