CCP Before SAA: Is AWS Cloud Practitioner a Prerequisite for Solutions Architect Associate?

Is CCP a prerequisite for SAA?

No. AWS does not require Cloud Practitioner before Solutions Architect Associate. AWS recommends about one year of hands-on AWS experience for the associate-level exam, but certification prerequisites have never included lower-level certs.

SAA-C03 will force you to learn the same core services, but with context. The difference is speed and stress.

The hidden benefit of doing CCP first

The strongest argument for CCP before SAA is not the curriculum. It is confidence. The cert is not technically hard, but it builds the habit of reading AWS-style questions, separating plausible-but-wrong answers, and managing exam time.

If you struggle with standardized tests, CCP is a useful on-ramp. If you do not struggle, it may be an unnecessary detour.

What you actually need before SAA-C03

AWS states the target candidate has at least one year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions that use AWS services. You do not need to become an expert in every service. You do need to be comfortable with:

Core compute: EC2, Lambda, Elastic Container Service

Storage: S3, EBS, EFS

Networking: VPC, subnets, security groups, NAT, Route 53

Databases: RDS, DynamoDB, ElastiCache

Security: IAM, KMS, resource policies

If that list looks intimidating, start with CCP. If it looks like a review list, go straight to SAA.
