AWS Skill Builder Student Subscription Showing 'Unavailable'? Use This Fix
Seeing `Unavailable` on your AWS Skill Builder Student subscription? Here's why the entitlement is not attaching to your login and the exact steps to recover access.
If you have an AWS Educate or AWS Student Hub reward that says `active`, but the Skill Builder student subscription tile shows `Unavailable`, you are not facing a billing issue. In almost every support case we see, this is an identity propagation problem: the training console does not see the entitlement on the AWS Builder ID or AWS account you are currently signed in with.
What `Unavailable` actually means
The Skill Builder catalog checks your login against a set of subscription entitlements. When the check fails, AWS falls back to the standard free tier and marks the Student subscription as `Unavailable`. The failure is usually one of three things:
You are using the wrong sign-in method.
AWS has not finished attaching the entitlement after Student Rewards verification.
Your academic verification was not completed in the AWS Educate or Student Hub workflow.
AWS Skill Builder supports multiple identity types: AWS Builder ID, AWS account root/IAM user, and organization SSO. Student subscriptions are typically tied to an AWS Builder ID, not an IAM user, because candidate verification is stored in the learning profile used at apply time. If you sign in with a work account or a different builder ID, that profile has no entitlement.
Quick checks before opening a ticket
1. Match your AWS Builder ID to your Student Rewards email
Open the email you used to apply for AWS Student Rewards or AWS Educate. Then sign in to [AWS Skill Builder](https://skillbuilder.aws/) using **AWS Builder ID**, not `AWS account`. Check the profile email under Settings. It must be the exact same address. If you created a second Builder ID with another email, the system will show `Unavailable`.
2. Give the entitlement time to propagate
AWS Training and Certification systems sync with the Student Hub on a scheduled cycle. After your reward is approved, the Skill Builder subscription can take anywhere from a few minutes to 24–48 hours to appear. Do not keep re-applying; duplicate applications can reset the verification state.
3. Complete academic verification
If you see a pending verification step in the [AWS Educate Student Hub](https://aws.amazon.com/education/awseducate/), finish it. The Skill Builder subscription will not activate until your student status is confirmed. Some campuses also require a valid institutional email. A personal email alone may not be enough for the Student subscription.
4. Try a clean browser session
Stale cookies often keep an old unentitled session active. Use a private window, clear site data for `skillbuilder.aws`, then sign in again with the correct Builder ID. This is especially common if you previously logged into Skill Builder with an AWS account or a corporate SSO.
5. Check regional eligibility
AWS Student Rewards are not available in every country. If your AWS Educate page shows the Skill Builder subscription in one region but the training console blocks it, confirm that the billing country and verified institution country are supported. AWS may show `Unavailable` for users in unsupported locations even after verification.
When to contact AWS Support
If all five checks pass and the subscription is still unavailable after 48 hours, take a screenshot of both:
The AWS Student Hub page showing the active reward.
The Skill Builder subscription page showing `Unavailable`.
Then open a case with [AWS Training and Certification Support](https://support.aws.amazon.com/#/contacts/aws-training). Include the email address on the Builder ID, the approval date, and the subscription name. Support can manually reattach the entitlement if the sync failed.
Bottom line
`Unavailable` rarely means you lost the reward. It almost always means your current Skill Builder login does not match the identity that AWS attached the Student subscription to. Use the correct AWS Builder ID, wait for propagation, complete academic verification, and test from a clean browser session. If it still fails after 48 hours, AWS Training and Certification Support can fix the attachment directly.
