AWS Recertification Time: The Clock, the Exam, and the Real Cost
AWS certifications expire after three years. Here is how long recertification actually takes, the fastest path to renew, and a preparation timeline for working engineers.
Most engineers treat AWS recertification as a calendar problem: the credential expires, so they need to schedule an exam. But the real AWS recertification time is not the 130 or 180 minutes in the testing chair. It is the preparation window that competes with shipping deadlines, on-call rotations, and the three other certifications that looked more interesting six months ago.
The three-year clock
Every AWS certification is valid for **three years** from the date you pass. AWS does not auto-renew credentials. The official [AWS Certification recertification policy](https://aws.amazon.com/certification/recertification/) states that you must recertify before the expiration date to maintain an active certification. If you passed AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate on May 12, 2025, your expiration date is May 12, 2028.
There is no grace period that keeps the credential alive after expiration. Once it lapses, you must pass the current version of the exam again.
What "recertification time" actually includes
For an active practitioner, recertification time breaks into three blocks:
**Exam time:** 130 minutes for Associate, 180 minutes for Professional, and 170 minutes for Specialty exams.
**Preparation time:** 2–4 weeks for engineers who use AWS daily; 6–8 weeks for those who have moved into management or a different stack.
**Process time:** scheduling, identity verification, and results delivery.
The preparation block is the variable. The clock does not care whether you are shipping a platform migration.
Recertify by exam or by higher-level certification
AWS offers a few paths to recertify. The most direct is passing the current version of your existing exam. For eligible Associate-level certifications, passing the matching Professional-level exam can also renew the Associate credential.

A preparation timeline that respects an engineering schedule
If you want to renew without pausing delivery work, spread the effort over five to seven weeks.
**Weeks 1–2: Gap analysis.** Download the exam guide for your certification from the [AWS Certification](https://aws.amazon.com/certification/) page. Mark every service you have not touched in the last year. Do not start with practice exams; start with the gaps.
**Weeks 3–5: Service deep dives.** Use AWS Skill Builder labs and targeted console work. Focus on services that changed since your last exam date: serverless, AI/ML services, and identity boundaries tend to evolve quickly.
**Week 6: Practice exams.** Take one full practice exam under timed conditions. Treat every wrong answer as a signal to close a gap, not as a score.
**Week 7: Schedule and sit the exam.** Schedule the exam early in the week so a production incident does not force you to reschedule at the last minute.
Avoiding a lapsed certification
The most expensive AWS recertification time is the one that starts after expiration. A lapsed certification means you are no longer distinguished from someone who has never held the credential. You also lose access to AWS Certification logos, eligible partner program credits, and the internal confidence that comes from having a current credential.
Set a reminder 270 days before expiration. That leaves enough room to choose between an exam, a higher-level certification, or the continuing education path without rushing.

AWS recertification is not a one-day event. The exam is short; the preparation is not. For most engineers, the realistic AWS recertification time is **four to eight weeks** of focused, part-time study, with an exam block of 130–180 minutes. Start before you feel ready. The three-year window is long enough to forget how long it actually takes.
