AWS certifications split into four tiers: Foundational, Associate, Professional, and Specialty. The Associate tier is where most working developers get the highest return. The Professional tier is denser and demands real operational depth. Specialty certifications are narrow, valuable, and expensive in time.
Start with the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03)
If you only earn one AWS cloud certificate, make it the Solutions Architect Associate. The exam forces you to reason about VPC design, IAM policies, S3 storage classes, EC2 placement groups, load balancers, RDS failover, and serverless event flows. Salary surveys from Skillsoft and Global Knowledge regularly rank AWS architecture credentials among the highest-paying cloud certifications. The Developer Associate (DVA-C02) is the stronger choice if your work is mostly CI/CD, Lambda, DynamoDB, API Gateway, and infrastructure as code. It is not an easier version of the architect path; it is a different lens.

Exam format, cost, and retake logic
Associate exams cost $150 USD, Professional and Specialty exams cost $300 USD, and Cloud Practitioner costs $100 USD, according to AWS exam pricing. The exams are multiple-choice or multiple-response, scored from 100 to 1000. Cloud Practitioner requires a 700 to pass, Associate requires 720, and Professional and Specialty require 750.
A realistic 12-week preparation plan
Weeks 1-2: Read the official exam guide and take a practice exam cold. Map your weak domains.
Weeks 3-6: Work through a structured course and build a small project: a public API behind CloudFront, S3 origin, Lambda, DynamoDB, IAM roles, and CloudWatch alarms.
Weeks 7-10: Use practice exams in timed mode. Review every wrong answer at the service level, not just the question level.
Weeks 11-12: Focus on cost optimization, security, and networking gaps. Re-take one official practice exam under exam conditions.
